City of Mobile wins federal grant to transform Three Mile Creek

Apr 21st, 2015

MOBILE, Ala. - Mayor Sandy Stimpson announced today that the City of Mobile will receive a $386,525 grant from the U.S. Department of Interior that will be used to transform Three Mile Creek.

The grant will pay for construction of a .75-mile multi-use trail featuring a fitness circuit, lighting, benches, and educational signage. The project is part of a larger effort to build a 12-mile greenway system throughout Three Mile Creek.

"This is a monumental step toward restoring Three Mile Creek to its historic significance in our city," said Mayor Stimpson. "Three Mile Creek was Mobile's drinking water source before World War II, and now it can once again connect communities throughout Mobile. This new trail will encourage fitness, beautify a vital waterway and educate citizens."

Mobile is one of eight cities to receive a grant from the Department's Land and Water Conservation Fund this year. Other recipients included Atlanta, Bridgeport, Conn., Detroit, Madison, Wisc., Minneapolis, Minn., and Portland, Ore.

Secretary of the Interior Sally Jewell and Director of the National Park Service Jonathan B. Jarvis announced the $3 million in grants Tuesday.

The competitive grant program invests the revenue from federal offshore oil and gas royalties into outdoor recreation facilities and conservation projects throughout the country.
