City of Mobile Uses Grant to Increase Road Visibility, Reduce Costs
Oct 11th, 2012
The City of Mobile has completed the installation of 1,144 light emitting diode (LED) street lights along three of the city’s major roadways, a move that will increase visibility, and reduce energy costs. Using a U.S. Department of Energy grant, the orange, 250-watt High Pressure Sodium lights have been replaced by 190-watt LED fixtures. The energy savings alone are expected to be $75,000 per year.
“Not only will we cut energy costs, but because these lights last longer, we will reduce maintenance expenses as well,” said Mayor Sam Jones. “This grant was procured by staff from our Electrical, Environmental, and Traffic Engineering departments. They have done a great job.”
The lights were installed along Government Blvd, Airport Blvd, and Dauphin Street. No additional funding from the grant is available, but more fixtures could be purchased using the savings from the lights already installed.
