City of Mobile Unveils Hurricane Preparedness Website

Jul 26th, 2006

Mayor Sam Jones and the City of Mobile are taking a new, proactive initiative in hurricane preparations. The city has put together a comprehensive checklist and other things to do when preparing for any tropical system that comes near the Gulf Coast.

On the site, www.cityofmobile.org/hurricane.php, citizens will find the following information:

• What to Have Checklist
• What to Do in Preparation
• How to Build a Family & Business Disaster Plan
• Evacuation Zones and Routes
• What to Bring and Why to go to a Medical Needs Shelter
• Emergency Phone Numbers
• Terminology and Acronyms

One unique feature of the website is a database that citizens can use to find out the flood risks of their home. Through the City of Mobile’s Geographical Information System (GIS) Department, citizens can type in their address, and instantly they will be notified of their level of flood risks, as defined by the latest FEMA maps, if they live in a storm surge zone, and which evacuation zone they live in, as defined by Mobile County Emergency Management Agency.

Citizens who do not have internet in their homes can access this information at any branch of the Mobile Public Library.
