Mobile, Ala. — The City of Mobile and its design team, led by Mott MacDonald, will host a public meeting on Nov. 6 to unveil the final design of the future Africatown Welcome Center.
Funded by the RESTORE Act, the Africatown Welcome Center will be an essential asset for the community. It will be an early stop for visitors who come to learn more about Africatown’s founders and the last slave ship, Clotilda. Our team has been gathering community input on various design concepts since April through public meetings, community surveys and other outlets for feedback.
Over the last seven months, that input from the public has guided the structural design concepts of the building as well as its exterior finishes, wall coverings and other design elements. These have all been incorporated into the final design plans, which will be shown to community members for the first time during a public meeting at the Robert Hope Community Center at 6 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 6.
Community members and stakeholders drove the design process, and everyone who participated is invited for the unveiling of the final plans. The design will also be published online at www.cityofmobile.org and shared on the City of Mobile’s social media pages following the meeting.
