City of Mobile to Seize all Abandoned Vehicles

Mobile, Ala. -- The Mayor's Office and the Mobile Police Department are launching Operation ABC (Abandoned Boats and Cars) to effectively remove all vehicles off public streets. Mayor Stimpson is calling for citizens to voluntarily relocate their cars before their vehicle is towed and they are they are issued a fine. MPD has already begun the process of identifying the owners of all abandoned vehicles, and all violators will be required to appear in court.

"Abandoned vehicles has become a serious issue in many of our neighborhoods, and many citizens have already voiced their concerns on this issue." said Mayor Stimpson. "Leaving these vehicles on our streets contributes to blight, negatively impacts accessibility on our roads and creates a safety hazard."

Parking for more than seven days and leaving damaged or wrecked vehicles for more than six hours is an ordinance violation, according to the Mobile City Code-Traffic Sec. 61-266.

It shall be unlawful and an offense against the city and shall constitute a nuisance for any person to park or leave standing on any public street or sidewalk in the city or its police jurisdiction, any car, bicycle, automobile, truck, wagon, cart or other vehicle of like kind or nature for a period in excess of seven (7) days. It shall be unlawful and an offense against the city and shall constitute a nuisance, for any person to park or leave standing on any public street, sidewalk, alley or other public place in the city or its police jurisdiction, any damaged or wrecked vehicle, not in use, for a period in excess of six (6) hours. Nothing contained herein shall be construed as prohibiting a person from parking his vehicle in the street adjacent to the curb in front of his premises, when such parking is not otherwise prohibited, if the vehicle is moved from time to time as convenience directs, the purpose of this section being to prohibit the abandoning of a vehicle on a public street or sidewalk.
