City of Mobile to Remain Open, Garbage and Trash Will Not Run Tuesday

Aug 27th, 2012

As Tropical Storm Isaac takes aim at the Gulf Coast, Mayor Sam Jones will suspend garbage/trash pick up in the city on Tuesday. However, the city will remain open tomorrow to address the needs of citizens during the storm.

The mayor urges all citizens in low lying areas to make the appropriate hurricane preparations. These areas should be evacuated, specifically areas along Dog River Watershed, Three Mile Creek Watershed and along Mobile Bay (Bay Front Road).

“It is vital that we do all we can to every precaution to safeguard lives and property,” the mayor said in an afternoon press conference. “Governor Bentley has established a mandatory evacuation in many of the low lying areas of Mobile.”

In an effort to communicate more affectively with all citizens, Jones is urging citizens to log all emergency contact information, both email and telephone numbers, with the city’s Alert Notification System. To log information, citizens can go to www.cityofmobile.org or call Mobile 311, which is accessible through some cell phone providers. If Mobile 311 is not accessible through a cell phone provider, call 208-5311.

“The contact information will be kept confidential and used by the city as well as, the County Emergency Management Agency,” the mayor added. “Rather citizens are at home, in a shelter or outside the city, we can provide accurate and timely emergency information.”

To continue the operation of city hall, Jones announced that the city’s Western Administrative Complex (WAC) will be operational and will serve as the site to house some critical logistic operation during the storm.
