City of Mobile to implement innovative software system

Oct 28th, 2014

MOBILE, Ala. - Mayor Sandy Stimpson today thanked members of the Mobile City Council for their unanimous approval of a contract for new computer software that will bring the City's outdated Information Technology system into the 21st century.

"This new system should dramatically improve the efficiency and effectiveness of the City of Mobile's operations," said Mayor Sandy Stimpson. "The city will realize huge benefits as soon as we get the new software installed."

The new Tyler Software suite of applications will utilize "cloud computing" technology to maintain the city's data, improving security and ease of use for city employees. It also will provide the city with disaster recovery capability in the event of a catastrophic event such as a hurricane.

Stimpson said the city's current software system dates back more than three decades and is becoming increasingly expensive to operate and maintain.

"Information technology is a critical investment and a strategic asset for the citizens we are here to serve," Stimpson said. "Our current system no longer meets the needs of a 21st Century city. The new system is ground-breaking, innovative and puts us on the leading edge of technology."

The administration included $2.2 million in its fiscal 2015 budget to pay for implementation of the new system, with a $1.6 million budgeted in subsequent years to pay for ongoing maintenance.
