City of Mobile to host Zoning Code Open Houses

Mobile, Ala. - As directed by the Map for Mobile, Mayor Stimpson has launched an overhaul of the zoning code led by White & Smith, LLC, a national land use law practice. To gain input from residents and stakeholders, the City is hosting a series of zoning code open houses from November 14 through November 17. The hours for each open house are from 3 to 8 pm with a 6:30 p.m. presentation.

The purpose of these interactive sessions is for members of the community to develop a deeper understanding of how Mobile grows and how the regulations guide that growth. This process will set the groundwork for updates to the City's Future Land Use Plan, zoning code, and subdivision regulations, supporting the vision provided within the Map for Mobile.

Updates to the zoning code could incorporate form-based zoning principles, allowance for a greater mix of uses, new sign regulations, and updated permitting processes for development projects. The effort seeks to better coordinate the development review process by removing inconsistencies and eliminating outdated policies.

"As the City develops, we want to ensure that Mobile becomes the city its residents want it to be," said Mayor Stimpson. "Improving Mobile's zoning code helps keep the City competitive when it comes to attracting new investment and retaining businesses. This next step will foster growth and be a catalyst for economic development."

• November 16: Mobile Museum of Art, Larkins Auditorium, 4850 Museum Drive


• November 17: New Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church, 2756 Old Shell Road
