City of Mobile to build skatepark in Public Safety Memorial Park

Nov 12th, 2014

MOBILE, Ala. - Mayor Sandy Stimpson today thanked members of the Mobile City Council for their unanimous approval of a proposal to build a skatepark in Public Safety Memorial Park.

This project was originally proposed two years ago, but became one of Mayor Stimpson's priorities immediately after he took office last year. Stimpson thanked members of the local skating community for their patience and their input in helping to establish the park.

"Improving the quality of life in Mobile is a core value of my administration," said Stimpson. "The new skatepark will enliven Public Safety Memorial Park and engage the skating community in tangible, meaningful way. We're excited to see their dream become a reality."

CSA Group Inc., a Mobile-based landscape architectural firm, designed the park in conjunction with Spohn Ranch of Los Angeles. The designers relied on feedback from Mobile's skating community and Jewel Cullen, owner of local business Wooden Heart Skate Shop.

The park's projected cost of $310,000 is a savings of nearly $140,000 over previous designs, and funding is being provided by proceeds from the Alabama Trust Fund.

Depending on the contractor's schedule, construction should begin within the next few weeks and be completed by May 2015.
