City of Mobile Supports 87 New Homeowners

Jun 12th, 2018

Mobile, Ala.-- The City of Mobile has helped 87 families realize their dream of home ownership since Fiscal Year 2014.

Through the City's Down Payment Assistance Program, the City assists families and individuals through financial support. Funding is provided by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.

"I really appreciated what the Down Payment Assistance Program has done for our young family," said Kirkwit Wetcha, a program participant. "Without this program the City of Mobile provided, it would have taken us years to come up with the down payment and closing cost. I always recommend this program to anybody that is interested in buying a home in the City of Mobile."

Mobile is significantly below the home ownership rate (55.5 percent), but the City hopes to exceed the national average (64.2 percent) through initiatives like the Down Payment Assistance Program.

"Home owners are more invested in their house and community," said Mayor Stimpson. "Not only does home ownership improve these families' quality of life, but it improves their neighbors' quality of life too. It prevents blight, improves property values and creates more vibrant neighborhoods."

First time home-buyers who are U.S. citizens or legal aliens with a valid Green card are eligible for the down payment assistance program. Applicants must meet the income requirements and intend to occupy the home as their primary residence.

All new home owners participate in pre-purchase counseling and home-buyer training classes taught by the Consumer Credit Counseling Services of Mobile. To register for a class, call 251-602-0011.
