City of Mobile revitalizing historic neighborhood

May 12th, 2015

"This new home is a prime example of how we are taking back our neighborhoods. It's the answer to many of the challenges we are facing including blight, housing and crime. You can expect more transformations like this in the months to come." - Mayor Sandy Stimpson

City Action:
  • The City of Mobile is in the process of restoring a home on South Texas Street, the 4th home on this block to be restored through the city's neighborhood renewal program this year.

    • The address of the new home is 1008 Texas Street located in the Oakleigh Garden historic neighborhood at the intersection of Texas and Chatham Streets.
    • Through the City of Mobile's neighborhood renewal program, Restore Mobile was able to replace the decaying structure with a historic, Creole cottage relocated from a nearby neighborhood.
    • The home is expected to be restored in the next 6 months.
    • This is the 70th home to be revitalized through the neighborhood renewal program in the past two years.

  • This initiative is a part of the city's solution to tackling blight and providing affordable housing in Mobile.
    • This particular building was deemed tax delinquent in 1999 forcing the city to pay to maintain the lot through its weed abatement program.
    • The City of Mobile acquired the tax deed to the property on July 19, 2013 and then proceeded to clear the title to the property which required notice to the property owners and a hearing in Circuit Court
    • The title was cleared on July 1, 2014 and then sold to Restore Mobile on September 12, 2014 for a profit of $2,500.
