City of Mobile Replaces Drug den with Affordable Housing
Jul 21st, 2017
MOBILE, Ala. -- In the same place where a 40-year-old drug den once stood, the City of Mobile is building a new home that will soon be available for rent as part of the city's ongoing effort to revitalize the Campground community. Utilizing funding from the federally funded HOME Program, the three bedroom, two bath house will provide additional affordable housing in the Campground neighborhood. Two years ago, the City demolished Mobile's last open air drug ring at 1076 State Street, where more than 650 drug transactions had been documented by the Mobile Police Department in two months. Officers arrested 13 people for trafficking and possession of illegal drugs at the location in 2015.The structure was a decades-long nuisance to the health and safety of the neighborhood.
"This is a significant milestone in the Campground community," said Mayor Stimpson. "After walking through this very block with Chief Barber. I made a promise to the neighborhood that I would come back to change it for the better. I remain committed to that promise. We will continue to work in this community until it is restored to its historic significance."
The Campground community will celebrate the accomplishment with a groundbreaking ceremony on Saturday at 1 pm followed by a cookout with the Mobile Police Department at 2 pm.
