City of Mobile Recoups $1 Million through Used Equipment Auction

Oct 6th, 2016

Mobile, Ala. - This fiscal year, the City has sold 418 items, such as vehicles and pieces of equipment, for more than $1 million through its online auction vendor, GovDeals.com.

The City of Mobile has created an asset disposal task force to ensure that used or excess items are properly disposed of at the best value to the City.

While certain specialized items are occasionally donated to other government agencies, the task force has found that selling items in online auctions generates the best return value to the City.

Selling the used equipment ensures that excess assets are transferred out of City garages and equipment rooms, which decreases the threat of loss, theft, or safety hazards.

"The resale of our used equipment demonstrates that our City is committed to saving the taxpayers' money while pursuing the most profitable and transparent methods in the disposal of our decommissioned assets," said Mayor Stimpson. "The revenue that we have received as a result of these auctions can now be reallocated to more effectively answer the needs of our communities. I applaud our disposal task force for safely and efficiently reducing our inventory of used items in a manner that gives us the resources to continue working to benefit the citizens of Mobile."
