City of Mobile Puts Community Back into Community Centers

Mobile, Ala. -- Following a comprehensive review of the City of Mobile's community centers, the recreational activities now offered cater to the communities they serve.

Rather than providing the same activities at every community center, each community center's schedule now revolves around the diverse interests of the surrounding neighborhoods. After surveying the individuals who utilize these facilities, the City customized each center's hours and programming to best fit their needs.

Different community centers are now offering organized sports, fitness training, nutrition classes, exercise and healthy snacks to encourage health and nutrition. To provide educational opportunities, the centers are offering computer classes, access to the Bookmobile, field trips to the Exploreum and the Mobile Public Library and resources to work on resumes and homework. To create a more fun atmosphere, centers are bringing in local artists, offering music and dance lessons and hosting Wii competitions and movie nights. Every community center is also now offering free meals for its participants.

"From now on, our community centers will focus on our community," said Mayor Stimpson. "We are empowering our recreation staff to transform our public facilities into neighborhood hubs. We must provide our community, especially our youth, access to health and nutrition, educational opportunities and fun activities. If we are successful, we will lower, if not eliminate, youth violence in Mobile."
