City of Mobile lights up historic Blacklawn neighborhood

Nov 13th, 2014

MOBILE, Ala. - Mayor Sandy Stimpson joined residents of the Blacklawn neighborhood at a ceremony to turn back on their street lights, ending three years of darkness.

Blacklawn residents have been pushing for years to replace the broken and antiquated lights in their historic subdivision. The new lighting and electrical system unveiled today has been a priority for the Stimpson administration since taking office last year.

"We heard our citizens, and we responded," Stimpson said. "These new lights will create a safer and more family-friendly neighborhood. It's a big step for Blacklawn, and another small step toward making Mobile the safest city in America by 2020."

The new lighting system includes modern, parallel circuits and a ground for safety purposes. The old lighting system - one of the first in the City of Mobile - was based on a single conductor cable that was so outdated that many of its replacement parts are no longer made.

The project's total cost was $95,000. The city's Electric Department was able to save $25,000 from original cost estimates.
