City of Mobile Launches New Program for First Responders Becoming Homeowners

Jun 28th, 2018

Mobile, Ala. -- The City of Mobile recently launched the Public Safety Down Payment Assistance Program to help police officers and firefighters become first time home owners.

To participate, the first responders must meet the income requirements and intend to occupy the home as their primary residence. They can receive up to $20,000 for down payment and eligible closing costs and up to $30,000 on formerly blighted properties. All funding is provided by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. The home must be within City limits, a single family home or condominium and up to code at the time of purchase.

"Not only does home ownership improve these first responders' quality of life, but it improves their neighbors' quality of life too," said Mayor Stimpson. "When a police officer or firefighter lives in your neighborhood, it reduces crime, improves property values and creates a more vibrant neighborhood."

All new home owners participate in pre-purchase counseling and home-buyer training classes taught by the Consumer Credit Counseling Services of Mobile. Participants are required to attend at least 8 hours of approved counseling. To register for a class, call 251-602-0011.

For more information about the program, potential participants can call 251-208-6292 or email chris.mcgadney@cityofmobile.org.
