City of Mobile constructs new homes in Oakleigh District

"These new homes are a prime example of how we are taking back our neighborhoods. It's the answer to many of the challenges we are facing including blight, housing and crime. You can expect more transformations like this in the months to come." - Mayor Sandy StimpsonCity Action: The City of Mobile constructed two new, single family homes in the Oakleigh Historic Garden District. The "Delaware Double" is a brand new duplex located at 906 and 908 Delaware Street.
Delaware Double Facts:
- Each duplex is 750 square feet and includes two bedrooms and one bath.
- Structure is wind resistant to 150 mph to withstand hurricanes and other natural disasters
- Property is a part of the City of Mobile's Neighborhood Renewal Program.
- City received the tax deed on May 2, 2014.
- Debris removed from the property included more than 70 tires
- City of Mobile cleared the title to the property which required notice to the property owners and a hearing in Circuit Court.
- The City achieved a clear title to this property on December 8, 2014.
- The City of Mobile's Community Housing and Development Department, under the leadership of Executive Director Nigel Roberts, purchased the modular home using HOME Investment partnership dollars.
- Property will be sold to a nonprofit organization that will then offer the homes to low income families
- Creates new, affordable housing in the community
