Aug 23rd, 2011

In the aftermath of the earthquake and tsunami that devastated Japan earlier this year, the City of Mobile and the Community Foundation of South Alabama teamed up to establish Mobile, Alabama’s Sister City, Ichihara, Japan Relief Fund. In addition to contributions from the City and the Foundation, citizens contributed to the fund. From lemonade stands to charity art shows, donations came in.

It culminated in today's check presentation. The total amount raised came to $50,000. It was presented to the Mobile Ichihara Sister City Association. In a video message, the Mayor of Ichihara, Takayoshi Sakuma, thanked the citizens of Mobile for their efforts.

The City of Ichihara provided disaster assistance to our community during the Gulf oil spill and in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. Ichihara and Mobile became Sister Cities on November 10, 1993.
