City of Mobile celebrating National Community Development Week

City of Mobile celebrating National Community Development Week
Mobile, Ala. — The City of Mobile will be working with nonprofit partners and other groups over the next four days to recognize National Community Development Week.
National Community Development Week was created to educate public officials and the community on the importance of the Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) program, the HOME Investment Partnerships (HOME) program, and the initiatives supported by other federal grants programs in communities around the country. In Mobile, CDBG and HOME funds have played a significant role in programs related to affordable housing, public services and expanding economic opportunities.
To recognize CDBG Public Service Day, several local non-profits will be set up in the atrium of Government Plaza today to talk with residents and visitors about the services they provide. Mayor Sandy Stimpson’s administration will also be recognizing the work these organizations do with a proclamation to be presented during the Mobile City Council meeting at 10:30 a.m. There will be other events throughout the week related to the City’s affordable housing and entrepreneurship programs.
Some of the nonprofit partners participating in National Community Development Week activities with the City of Mobile include Housing First, Inc., McKemie Place, Family Promises of Coastal Alabama, Dumas Wesley Community Center, Ozanam Charitable Pharmacy, Dearborn YMCA, Mobile Area Interfaith Conference, Inc., VIA Senior Center and the Boys & Girls Club of South Alabama.
Funding from CDBG, HOME and other federal programs also helps support several of the City’s affordable housing initiatives like the critical repair grant and down payment assistance programs. These programs maximize available federal dollars and have helped scores of qualifying Mobilians purchase their first home or keep their current home from becoming blighted and uninhabitable.
“Our Neighborhood Development Department is able to put more resources into reducing blight, expanding affordable housing, and growing economic opportunities for all Mobilians because of the support we receive through federal programs like CDBG,” Mayor Stimpson said. “Our staff is able to find and maximize the impact of federal grant opportunities because we have established and proven programs that already meet federal standards operating in communities where they are needed most.”
