City of Mobile Celebrates National Historic Preservation Month

Mobile, Ala. - This month, the City of Mobile is taking part in the nationwide celebration of National Historic Preservation Month. Throughout the remainder of May, Mobilians may choose from an array of tours showcasing some of Mobile's most prominent landmarks."Mobile's participation in National Historic Preservation Month is important because it highlights the incredible history of our City," said Mayor Stimpson. "Mobile has been a prosperous City that is diverse in its businesses, population and culture."
Three events remain in this month's celebration of the Port City's historic culture.
Cruising Conception
On Thursday, May 19th, join Cartlege Blackwell in "Cruising Conception," a walking tour of one of Mobile's more overlooked areas. Conception Street is home to some of Mobile's most notable locations. Whether it is Bienville Square, Christ Church Cathedral, or a new and undiscovered landmark, Conception Street offers plenty of opportunities to discover the fascinating history of one of downtown Mobile's most popular streets. "Cruising Conception" is free of charge, and on-street parking is available. If interested, meet at 5:30 PM at the intersection of Conception and Church Streets. Barton Academy Open House
On Saturday, May 21st, Barton Academy will host an open house from 10:00 AM-12:00 PM. Located on Government Street, Barton Academy was built in 1836 and today stands as a representation of excellence in both education and design. The storied institution will offer free tours highlighting its recent exterior restoration, as well as an optional tour of the iconic Barton Dome for $10. Representatives from the school and the Barton Academy Foundation will be in attendance to answer questions about the future of Barton Academy. Lowdown on LoDa
On Tuesday, May 24th and Thursday May 26th, join Dauphin Street business owners and developers to get the "Lowdown on LoDa." Check out recent building renovations, get a glimpse at upcoming and ongoing projects, and learn the history of Dauphin Street. "Lowdown on LoDa" is free of charge, and on-street parking is available. If interested, the tentative meeting location is the corner of Dauphin Street and South Cedar Street at 5:30 PM.
