City of Mobile Brownfields Assessment Program Announces Kickoff Meeting

The City of Mobile Department of Environmental Services announces their first Brownfields Assessment Kick-off Meeting. The meeting will take place on Wednesday, March 3, 2010, from 6:00 – 8:00 PM at the Government Plaza Building –Multipurpose Room, 205 Government St, Mobile, AL 36602. The meeting will inform community members about the brownfields assessment program and how the City of Mobile was awarded two Community-Wide Assessment Grants from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Meeting attendees will have the opportunity to hear directly from city, state & EPA officials and the project consultants while learning how they can become key stakeholders and provide input on the process.

The City of Mobile was awarded grants from EPA to conduct brownfields assessments communitywide. Brownfields are underused industrial and commercial properties where redevelopment has not occurred because they are seen as potentially contaminated sites. Through the assessment program, several properties within the Downtown and Loop communities will be surveyed for their potential redevelopment. Cleaning up brownfields increases the local tax base, increases job growth and improves as well as protects the environment. Involving as many different stakeholders in the community as possible is an important goal of this project. Those stakeholders include residents, community groups, property owners, business owners, and various City of Mobile departments, among others.
