City of Mobile breaks ground on first phase of the Mobile Greenway

Mobile, Ala. -- The City of Mobile broke ground on the first phase of the Mobile Greenway on Monday, the next step towards building a multi-model pathway that will link neighborhoods, businesses and residents across Mobile.

"This is a monumental step towards restoring Three Mile Creek to its historic significance," said Mayor Stimpson. "Three Mile Creek was once Mobile's drinking water source before World War II, and now it can once again connect communities throughout the City of Mobile. This new trail will encourage fitness, beautify a vital waterway and educate our citizens."

Construction is now underway on the first mile of the trail. The first phase begins along the north side of Three Mile Creek starting from Tricentennial Park and continuing on to West Ridge Road. Within a mile radius of the first phase, there are 69,000 residents, 900 businesses and 3 hospitals.

The new trail will feature a 10-foot wide multi-use walking and biking path, a fitness zone, landscaping, solar lighting, benches, a kayak launch and educational signage. The project is expected to be complete in 10 months.

The City is now leading the planning and construction efforts that will use a phased approach that builds the trail in sections over time. The Three Mile Creek Greenway Trail Management Plan is expected to be complete this summer that will be the framework that identifies next steps, cost estimates, community benefits, easement needs and logical project section priorities.

"While so many projects are changing the face of our neighborhoods, this one will change the landscape of the city as a whole," said Council President Gina Gregory. "This trail connects communities along the length of the city and city leaders, organizations and citizens through this common effort."

For individuals interested in becoming more involved, the Mobile Greenway Fund was established by The Community Foundation of South Alabama to receive charitable contributions and grants designated to support the City of Mobile's Greenway Initiative. To make a contribution, contributions can be mailed to CFSA at P.O. Box 990, Mobile, AL 36601, checks payable to Mobile Greenway Fund. Donors may also give through PayPal at www.communityfoundationsa.org and designate the "Mobile Greenway Fund" when making their donation.

The Three Mile Creek Greenway Trail is a part of a larger effort to transform the City of Mobile by creating a network of biking and pedestrian paths throughout the community. This project will ease traffic congestion, provide additional avenues for citizens and guests to exercise and increase property values. The overall vision is to create a 12 mile multi-purpose biking and walking path which will connect Langan Park to Downtown Mobile and Mobile Bay.
