City of Mobile Awarded $1 Million Grant from U.S. Department of Justice

Nov 25th, 2008

Mayor Sam Jones is proud to announce that the City of Mobile has been awarded a $1 million grant from the United States Department of Justice for the city’s Weed and Seed Program.

Weed and Seed is a comprehensive strategy designed to create partnerships to benefit the community and create a sustainable program. Weed and Seed is foremost a strategy designed to help build the momentum needed for the residents of a community to establish themselves and to steer their community in the direction that they want. There is grant money available, but this funding is not indefinite and it is a modest amount. The grant money is not designed to replace funding but rather to help create partnerships and move the community toward a self sustaining program.

"This grant will greatly enhance our ability to empower targeted neighborhoods in their quest to create a more crime-free and more wholesome community," said Mobile Mayor Sam Jones. "Mobile is extremely fortunate to be one of the cities to receive this award."

“Weed and Seed has a record of transforming neighborhoods,” said Councilman Fred Richardson, whose district includes Weed and Seed communities. “With the latest grant, I can foresee them making an even greater impact in improving and stimulating distressed areas of our city.”
