City of Mobile Animal Shelter to begin construction for new dog and cat buildings

Feb 13th, 2015

MOBILE, Ala. - The Friends of the Mobile Animal Shelter (FOMAS) will start construction this month on long-awaited new buildings for dogs and cats at the City of Mobile Animal Shelter.

The new dog kennel will include 11 kennel runs and an indoor bathing area for dogs awaiting adoption. Additionally, FOMAS will construct a new building to house stray and adoptable cats to replace a trailer that has exceeded its shelf life. These new facilities will increase accessibility to the public and will ensure the shelter is equipped to carry out its "no healthy death" policy.

The groundbreaking ceremony will be held on Friday, February 27 at 2 pm at the City of Mobile Animal Shelter, 855 Owens St., Mobile, AL 36604. Architectural services are provided by Dakinstreet Architects and Aeiker Construction Corporation will act as the contractor.

The City of Mobile is providing 50 percent of the funding for this project and the rest is funded through private donations.

"It's important that we provide our shelter with the resources to take care of Mobile's stray dogs and cats," said Mayor Stimpson. "Not only are we protecting these animals when we take them off the streets, but we are protecting our families too."
