City of Mobile and the Downtown Parking Diplomats team up for the Holiday Season to help out the Salvation Army

Dec 8th, 2006

The City of Mobile Officer of Neighborhood & Community Services has teamed up with the Downtown Parking Diplomats to create a mechanism whereby any monies put into certain parking meters on the weekends throughout the Holiday Season will be directly donated to the Salvation Army to help with their mission.

Beginning, Friday, December 8, 2006, the meters surrounding Cathedral & Bienville Squares will be decorated and have notices put on them to alert the public that:

“Although parking is free on the weekends, your generous donation will go directly to the Salvation Army during this Holiday Season.” At a time when most people are counting pennies to save for holiday spending, this is an affordable way for people to give to a local charity that does not hurt their wallets.

The Downtown Parking Diplomats will handle the donations by emptying the meters each Friday evening and collecting the donated monies each Monday morning. General Manager David Buchannan modeled this program after a successful promotion done in North Carolina as a way to raise funds for Hurricane Katrina victims. Both he and the Mayor Jones hope that people will respond by coming down on the weekends to eat, shop, visit our wonderful attractions, and take advantage of this great opportunity to give back during the Holiday Season.
