Aug 26th, 2015
MOBILE, Ala. - The City of Mobile and Mobile Public Library (MPL) are partnering to create a new computer library at the James Seals Jr. Park and Recreation Center. The library is equipped with eight computers along with a selection of books for children and adults. MPL will continue to expand the library as more books become available."We want to give our young people the tools and resources to succeed in every facet of life," said Mayor Sandy Stimpson. "We appreciate the great partnership with Mobile Public Library and look forward to expanding this service across the City of Mobile. Our goal is to establish computer libraries at all of our recreation centers."
Each computer has access to the internet and word processing capabilities for students to complete homework assignments after school. Free wireless internet service is also available throughout the recreation center. A volunteer computer instructor will be on hand for technical support and the center is currently working on scheduling free computer classes for anyone who is interested.
The Mobile Public Library's "Teen Librarian" will also be available to encourage more student involvement at the recreation center. The new library is open from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Monday-Thursday and 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Fridays.
Beginning this week, MPL's Bookmobile along with the City of Mobile's Fun Mobile will periodically visit each of the city's recreation centers to build awareness and activity around the new library.
In addition to the computer library, the Seals Park and Recreation Center also offers tennis, line dancing, basketball, piano, hand drumming and table games. The center, located at 540 Texas Street, recently opened its new tennis courts and splash pad and will be opening its new recreational path later this year.
