City of Mobile and ALDOT to create new bicycle lanes

Jun 28th, 2016

Mobile, Ala. - The City of Mobile and the Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT) are working in tandem to design new bicycle lanes for the Spring Hill Avenue corridor.

"Creating more bike lanes and sidewalks across the City has been a priority of this administration since taking office and was identified as a priority by our citizens during the Map for Mobile long range planning process," said Mayor Stimpson. "To be a family-friendly city, we need to be a pedestrian-friendly city. It is important that we provide the citizens of Mobile with the necessary infrastructure to feel comfortable walking or biking across the City of Mobile."

ALDOT will convert a section of Spring Hill Avenue from N. Catherine to Broad Street from six lanes to five lanes to allow space for 4 foot bicycle lanes. This is a part of a larger restriping and resurfacing project for US 98 that will extend 4.7 miles. Construction is expected to begin after Labor Day and will take four to six months to complete.

"The new bike lanes on Springhill Ave are welcomed additions to an area of Mobile who's residents depend heavily on bicycles for their transportation needs," said Jeff DeQuattro, Executive Director of the Delta Bike Project. "The need for these lanes has been apparent for some time due to multiple car-on-bicycle crashes in these areas, and we applaud the City of Mobile and ALDOT for stepping up and improving the safety for motorists and people on bikes in this area."
