CITY HONORS FIRST BLACK POLICE OFFICER

Jun 13th, 2003

City officials looking for a way to honor Mobile's first black police officer found one when they named the First Precinct on Virginia Street in his honor. Now, the building is called the Walter Jackson Police Precinct.

District 2 Mobile City Councilman, Thomas Sullivan says when he learned Jackson served the city for 40 years and was the first black officer in Mobile, he wanted to make sure Jackson was honored and remembered for his service. Sullivan says Jackson opened doors for other blacks to become police officers.

In thanking Sullivan and other city officials, Jackson said he did his job because he liked his job.

Jackson is 78 and began his career with the Mobile Police Department February 1, 1954.
