City Gets Tough on Copper Thieves

Mar 15th, 2007

The Mobile City Council made changes to the City Code that pertain to copper and other scrap metal sales to prevent copper thieves. The price of copper has been on the rise, and copper theft has become more prevalent in our city and throughout the nation.

“We want to send a message to people thinking about stealing copper – not in our city,” said Mayor Sam Jones. “They cause thousands of dollars in damage to steal copper worth considerable less. It’s a problem that must be stopped. This will help our police department crack down on copper thieves.”

From now on, scrap metal buyers will need to keep more in depth records of the purchasing of some metals such as copper, aluminum and stainless steel. They will also have to hold on to those metals for a minimum of 72 hours before they are resold.
