Christus Lecture Series Opens with September Presentations

Sep 6th, 2004

Mobile, Ala. - The 2004-05 season of the Christus Lecture Series will open Tuesday, Sept. 21, with a preview of the upcoming Dead Sea Scrolls exhibit in Mobile. Open to the public, the lecture will take place at 7 p.m. in the Gautrelet Room on the Spring Hill College campus.

As part of the lecture, guest exhibit curator Ellen Herron will discuss details of the scrolls and artifacts, and Spring Hill College theology professor Dr. Tim Carmody will lecture on the significance of the scrolls and the community that wrote them. The scrolls themselves will be at the Gulf Coast Exploreum starting in January. The Sept. 21 lecture will give the public a sneak peek of the exhibit and some insight into why the scrolls are so important both archeologically and theologically.

On Thursday, Sept. 30, the Christus Lecture Series will welcome Florence Caffrey Bourg for "Where Two or Three are Gathered: Christian Families as Domestic Churches." This lecture will also be in the Gautrelet Room at 7 p.m.

Bourg is an assistant professor in the department of religious and pastoral studies at the College of Mount Saint Joseph in Cincinnati, Ohio. She has written a book on how the Christian family can be the basic unit of the church as a whole. She will talk about her research across academic fields in search of new insight into the role of the family in modern churches.

Christus is an ecumenical group of individuals and churches dedicated to inspiring and supporting theological dialogue. The Christus Lecture Series is free to Christus members and $2 for guests. For more information, directions or to RSVP, call 251-380-4660 or email jstriplin@shc.edu.
