Mobile County Debris Clean Up

Sep 29th, 2004

An estimated 51,000 cubic yards of debris has been collected  in Mobile County, said U. S. Corps of Engineers officials Wednesday. The current yardage collection is about half of the amount of debris collected during Hurricane George which slammed into the Gulf Coast in 1998.

During an informational briefing Wednesday, Corps officials said  they expect the clean-up in the county will likely take 60 days.

Currently there are 40 work crews in various zones of the county. The zones are as follows:

  • Zone 1 Spring Hill area
  • Zone 3 Central Mobile
  • Zone 4 Western Mobile County (west of Highway 90 up to Three Notch Road and Theodore)
  • Zone 5 Dauphin Island
  • Zone 6 South Mobile County (45% complete in collection)
  • Zone 7 East Mobile County - around Airport Blvd.
  • Zone 8 North Mobile County

Citizens are urged to:

Separate all hurricane related vegetative debris (trees, limbs and shrubbery) from white goods (appliances, furniture, air conditioners and construction debris);

Make sure the doors are taken off all discarded refrigerators or freezers for safety reasons.
