Automated Garbage Educational Forum

Jul 17th, 2003

The first of many educational forums on the City of Mobile’s new automated garbage service will be held Thursday, July 17, 2003 at 6:00 p.m. at the Mary Abbie Berg Center, 1717 Dauphin Street. The public is invited to attend this forum, to ask questions about the service and to see and test examples of new garbage carts the City will provide.

The Mobile Area Advisory Council for the Disabled is sponsoring this forum. Members have just concluded a survey of other cities that have an automated program to find out how they provide garbage service to residents with special needs-such as the disabled and the elderly. They will share results of this survey with city officials and residents.

About 9,000 people who live in Mobile Council District 1 will be the first to use the new service. The city will begin with twice per week pick up, then move on to once per week service before expanding to once per week pick up in 42% of the city-all east of I-65. Within a year after beginning the once per week pick up, the city hopes to expand the automated service to the rest of the city. Until that time, the city will continue the same twice per week pick up using the old 3-man trucks for people who live west of I-65 in districts 1,4,6 & 7.
