Alabama SAF-T-Net Alerts Mobile County Residents to Severe Weather

The Mobile County Emergency Management Agency encourages all residents to sign up for Alabama SAF-T-Net, a free weather alerting service. Severe weather in the area yesterday produced dangerous storms that included at least one unconfirmed tornado in Mobile. Mobile County EMA Director Ronnie Adair strongly encourages citizens to take advantage of this early detection and alerting service.

During yesterday’s storms, Alabama SAF-T-Net sent more than 1700 Dangerous Storm alerts to subscribers with monitored locations in affected areas. Once the National Weather Service (NWS) issued Tornado Warnings, Alabama SAF-T-Net then sent out more than 2,000 alerts to those subscribers within the warning polygons. In total, Alabama SAF-T-Net sent out more than 6,000 alerts during a six hour time frame around the storms.

Alabama SAF-T-Net (Specific Alerting for Threats) is a no cost, site-specific weather alerting system which is fully automated, patented and utilizes a choice of land line voice calls, email or text messaging to provide notification ahead of severe weather. Subscribers can select up to four addresses for SAF-T-Net to monitor. When severe weather threatens any selected location, SAF-T-Net will automatically send a subscriber an alert through their chosen platform. Alerts from SAF-T-Net include:

· National Weather Service storm-based (polygon) tornado, severe thunderstorm, and flash flood warnings

· Baron-patented advisories for strong or dangerous twisting storms approaching designated locations

· Mitigation messaging from Emergency Management

· Breaking weather updates from Media Partners
