Advertising Helps Police Catch Crooks

Nov 30th, 2007

The Mobile Police Department and Lamar Advertising Co. have embarked on a unique relationship to flash the photos and names of violent criminals or missing persons on the new digital billboards in Mobile.

“This is a very exciting partnership that will allow us to move fast and efficiently if we’re looking for violent criminals, or if we need to find a missing person who might be in distress,” said Police Chief Phillip Garrett.

Lamar Advertising has offered to put up photos and information on individuals sought by police. In emergencies, the data can go up in lights in a matter of 15 minutes. “We are extremely grateful to our partners at Lamar for this opportunity, because time is a commodity we often don’t have in this business,” Garrett said.

“It’s not only important in the event of a fleeing felon,” he added. “When we have abducted children, or missing Alzheimer’s patients, time is crucial for success. This one element could be the lifeline for some of our most vulnerable citizens.”

The digital signs are permanent and prominent, and are located on roadways throughout the area. Lamar has 13 of the digital signs in Mobile and is continuing to place new ones in the area.

“It’s exciting for us as well to be a part of the mission of the Police Department,” said Troy Tatum, vice president and general manager of Lamar Advertising. “We hope it will contribute to a better and safer community.”

The first electronic wanted poster has gone up in lights this morning. It features 21-year-old Oscar Finch. He is wanted in connection with the November 20 robbery of the Compass Bank at 2901 Spring Hill Ave.

Citizens may also view the wanted persons featured on the billboards by going to the CrimeStoppers page on the Mobile Police Department website.
