Good evening,

It is 8:15 p.m. Friday, May 15, and I am writing to give you an update on the City of Mobile's efforts regarding COVID-19.

As of tonight, there are 1,637 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Mobile County, out of 14,245 total tests There are 99 deaths attributed to the virus.

Happy Friday! Another busy week consumed with the fight against Coronavirus. We continue to devote significant time and energy on this threat to our community.

Looking back over the past five days, it's amazing to think about the number of phone calls, Zoom meetings, interviews and teleconferences we conduct to stay in communication with our partners at the local, state and federal levels.

One of the biggest challenges throughout the crisis has been the access to reliable data about COVID-19. While we have made big improvements in this area over the past several weeks, we must continue to push for more and better data which will help us to strengthen our hand in this fight.

One of the highlights of this week was the release of the first series of checks to local businesses through our Ignite Mobile program. We are continuing to process the applications and distribute the payments as quickly as possible, to help these businesses get back on their feet.

It is encouraging to see our restaurants, barber shops and small retailers re-opening their doors to customers. Of course, it is imperative that we all proceed with caution to avoid spreading the virus.

Today we also spent time working with our department heads on developing their plans to safely return employees to their offices. The work of the City has continued during this crisis, and there are a number of exciting initiatives that will be introduced over the next few weeks.

As we head into the weekend, please stay safe and remember to practice good hygiene and social distancing.

Sincerely,

Mayor Sandy Stimpson
