A Message from Mayor Stimpson - June 4
Jun 4th, 2020
Good evening,
It is 9 p.m. on Thursday, June 4, and I am writing to give you an update on the City of Mobile's efforts regarding COVID-19.
As of tonight, there have been 2,330 total confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Mobile County, out of 28,214 total tests. There are 118 deaths attributed to the virus. There have been no deaths in Mobile County since June 1, according to the Mobile County Health Department.
There were 37 new patients with active COVID-19 as of this morning.
Please remember that COVID-19 is still active in our community and we all must continue the recommended safety guidelines:
- Keep a safe difference of at least 6 feet from others
- Wash your hands regularly
- Wear a mask when shopping or when in public places.
Many of us have experienced hurricanes and we know that planning for hurricane season can be stressful, especially as the 2020 hurricane season comes during the COVID pandemic.
Tropical Depression Cristobal is predicted to stay near the western Yucatan Peninsula coast through Friday. Thereafter, Cristobal moves north into the Gulf over the weekend and will strengthen back to a tropical storm. Heavy rainfall is possible late Saturday night into early Monday morning, especially closer to the coast.
Our local emergency management experts recommend that you safely prepare, evacuate and shelter while protecting yourself and others from COVID-19. During this difficult time of COVID-19 and hurricane season, we must take time to think about our evacuation plans.
Please make every effort to stay with family, travel further inland or shelter in place if it is safe to do so. Should a shelter be your last resort, the Mobile County Unified Command would like to share some tips from the Centers for Disease Control for COVID-19 safety in the shelter.
Today mourners gathered at a private funeral service in Minneapolis for George Floyd, whose death in police custody sparked widespread protests against police violence and systemic racism.
Our nation has been shaken by his senseless death. Events of the past two weeks have served as a wake-up call that we must address the injustices and social inequities that have divided us for too long.
We are committed to achieving justice. This is our mission, and we stand ready to work with any and all who will join with us in a collaborative effort to fulfill it.
Tomorrow I will participate in the first in a series of meetings with community leaders as we roll up our sleeves and begin this dialogue. There is a place at the table for you. Please join with us as we work together to build a Better Mobile.
Sincerely,
Sandy Stimpson
