A Message from Mayor Stimpson - June 17
Jun 17th, 2020
Good evening,
It is 9 p.m. on Wednesday, June 17 and I am writing to give you an update on the City of Mobile's efforts regarding COVID-19.
As of tonight, there have been 2,809 total confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Mobile County, out of 37,354 total tests. There were 25 new patients with active COVID-19 as of this morning, and one death since Tuesday.
We continue to see increasing numbers of infections, a sure sign that the virus is still spreading within our community. The biggest shift has been a sharp decrease in the number of positive cases at long-term care facilities such as nursing homes.
That is a positive trend and an indication that the steps we have taken to address that problem have been effective.
It is concerning, however, that new cases are growing by community spread. The fact is this is entirely preventable if we will all just follow the safety guidelines as recommended by the Centers for Disease Control:
- Keep a safe distance of at least 6 feet from others
- Wash your hands regularly
- Wear a mask when shopping or when in public places
- Clean any surfaces around you
We continue to grow stronger in the fight against this virus. We have significantly improved our testing capability so we can quickly identify and isolate new cases.
Our hospitals are in excellent shape and are ready to handle new patients should the need arise. Not only do they currently have plenty of bed space and ventilators available, but they've also implemented new protocols so they are only admitting new patients who truly need to be hospitalized.
Perhaps the most positive trend is that our death rate is down significantly.
This is the best possible news, but we cannot drop our guard. The reality is that the more people who have COVID-19, the more people are going to spread it.
While we have some good results, we don't have everyone's attention as we should. The numbers continue to go up across the State of Alabama. Please take responsibility by wearing a face covering, washing your hands and keeping a safe distance from others.
It's our responsibility to protect our own health and to protect those around us.
Sincerely,
Sandy Stimpson
