Good evening,
It is 9 p.m. on Wednesday, June 10, and I am writing to give you an update on the City of Mobile’s efforts regarding COVID-19.
As of tonight, there have been 2,563 total confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Mobile County, out of 31,028 total tests. There were 59 new patients with active COVID-19 as of this morning.
There are 127 deaths attributed to the virus, an increase of 1 since Tuesday.
The daily increase of 59 new cases is the highest number reported in one day in the past three weeks. Health experts are reviewing the data to determine what may be causing the increase. It does come about two weeks after the Memorial Day holiday when many people were part of large gatherings.
Health experts also warn that the recent protests and public demonstrations may contribute to a spike in cases in the days ahead. If you choose to participate in one of these events, please take steps to protect yourself from exposure.
The numbers are a sure indication that Coronavirus remains active in our community and a very real threat to public health. The good news is that testing continues to increase and our local hospitals remain ready to take care of patients who experience severe symptoms.
Please continue to follow the recommended safety guidelines:
- Keep a safe distance of at least 6 feet from others
- Wash your hands regularly
- Wear a mask when shopping or when in public places.
Looking around the state, Mobile County has the greatest overall number of cases at 2,563. It is followed by Montgomery County with 2,290 and Jefferson County with 2,187.
Alabama Department of Public Health statistics show 95% of the deaths in Alabama were among those with preexisting conditions, the most common being cardiovascular disease. If you fall into one of the at-risk categories, please be extra careful when in public settings.
The state’s amended Safer at Home order remains in place through July 3. This order applies to any gathering of people in group settings. In those cases, please keep a safe distance and use a face covering.
