It is 9:30 p.m. on Tuesday, August 18 and I am writing to give you an update from the City of Mobile.
As of tonight, the Mobile County Health Department reports a total of 11,295 COVID-19 positive patients, an increase of 61 patients from yesterday's report. There are a total of 236 patients that have died as a result of COVID-19. For a detailed look at today's data click here.
Today marks 100 years since the ratification of the 19th amendment to the U.S. Constitution, giving women the right to vote. We must also recognize the bravery of countless suffragists who paved the way for gender equality at the ballot box. Their determination and sacrifices echo through the last century, and continue to make a positive impact on this great nation.
Last night, I mentioned the enduring work of our team during the COVID-19 pandemic. Our Parks and Recreation team have been a shining example of that dedication. While working to create new virtual and social distance programming, the team also provided critical services to our community by distributing 28,123 meals to children and another 13,785 meals to seniors. These were major undertakings by themselves, but their diligent work didn't end there.
Since March, our parks and amenities have received deep cleanings, repairs, and upgrades. Community centers received new gym floors. Azalea City Golf Course has an upgraded irrigation system, restriped parking lot, newly painted tee markers and fairway yardage markers. Around our tennis centers, 6 courts were resurfaced, plus 9.5 miles of chain link fence and 118 light poles were painted. Every single day, our Parks and Recreation team are finding ways to make Mobile a better place to work and play.
For women, the right to vote was called an impossibility until 100 years ago. The work of suffragists, undefeated by adversity, didn't stop with this most fundamental right. Their work paved the way for women getting involved at every level of government. For leaders like Senior Director of Parks and Recreation Shonnda Smith, and many other exceptional women on our administrative team, I am immensely grateful. The contributions of female leadership throughout the City of Mobile are immeasurable.
