$1.3 Million in Hurricane Relief Funds Coming to Mobile Area

United Way of Southwest Alabama thanked Mayor Jones for his assistance as today it announced the non-profit agencies and organizations to be awarded funding from the second round of Phase 2 Hurricane Response & Recovery Grants to assist them with hurricane relief efforts. The grants will be used to purchase necessary appliances, basic furnishings, daily living items, utility assistance, childcare assistance, rent or mortgage assistance, and construction consulting such as permit fees and utility inspections.The grant award recipients are: Clarke County Long Term Recovery Committee, - $23,000; Family Counseling Center - $150,000; Girl Scouts of the Deep South - $27,500; Gulf Coast Regional Childcare - $131,000; Homeless Coalition of the Gulf Coast - $20,000; Lighthouse Community Development - $76,000; Mobile Community Action - $30,000; Mobile Mental Health - $30,000; Saint John’s Deliverance Temple - $25,000; Senior Citizens Services - $6,000; Volunteers of America Southeast - $57,450.
This $575,950 represents the balance of $1.3 million awarded United Way of Southwest Alabama by United Way of America in January 2006.
On May 10, 2006 the first round of Phase 2 Hurricane Response and Recovery fund grants, totaling $752,500, was awarded to the following agencies and organizations. Bay Area Food Bank, - $50,000; Camp Whispering Pines - $15,300; Clarke County Long Term Recovery Committee - $47,200; Family Counseling Center - $30,000; Gulf Coast Regional Childcare Management- $138,000; Homeless Coalition of the Gulf Coast - $105,000; Lighthouse Community Development - $15,000; Mobile Community Action - $100,000; United Cerebral Palsy - $50,000; Volunteers of America - $152,000; Washington County Long Term Recovery Committee - $50,000.
A $200,000 Phase I grant, awarded in September 2005, was utilized in south Mobile County just weeks after Hurricane Katrina made landfall for utility payments, household appliances and prescriptions and other medical needs.
