TWO FIREFIGHTERS INJURED AT VACANT HOUSE FIRE
Two Mobile Firefighters were injured at an early morning house fire located on Lincoln Blvd, Saturday, August 9. The fire was report at approximately 4:00 a.m.
When firefighters arrived on the scene they discovered heavy fire coming through the roof of a single story, wood frame with brick veneer structure.
Firefighters were told the structure had been vacant for about 6 months, was used for storage and that one of the caregivers had been on the scene at approximately 8:00 p.m. Friday evening.
Firefighters searched the structure but found no one inside.
While fighting the fire, what is believed to be a heavy wooden object fell from the attic and struck Fire Captain Clay Lyons on the head knocking him to the ground where he landed on a large screen television and Firefighter Pat Henderson had a heavy object strike him on the foot.
Both were transported to Springhill Medical Center for treatment. Lyons was admitted for observation and Henderson was treated and released.
The fire appears to have originated in a front bedroom and extended to the attic and through the roof. There was fire, heat and smoke damage throughout the structure.
There were no utilities servicing the house but fire investigators do not suspect anything suspicious at this time. The cause remains under investigation.
Damage is estimated at approximately $50 thousand.
Engines 1, 15, 22, 26; truck 27; rescues 1, 26 and Acting District Chief, Captain Art Lami responded to the call.
The Bureau of Fire Prevention is conducting the investigation.
