MOBILE, Ala – At approximately 1:46 PM, Mobile Fire-Rescue Department crews were dispatched to the area of 16 S Julia Street for reports of a residence on fire in the area.
Upon arrival on scene, fire personnel discovered a 2-story, brick residence presenting with flames breaking through the roof and thick, black smoke billowing from the upper floor and attic.
Fire scene operations were immediately established, as fire suppression teams secured a water source and extended 1 ¾” hose lines in preparation for their initial attack. Suppression teams rushed entry into the structure through the front and rear doors, pushing their way through smoke and flames as they extended to the second floor.
Additional suppression efforts were enabled to attack from the exterior. Crews placed ground ladders on second side of the structure, extending to the upper floor windows. Ground and window ladder units supplied additional suppression support, protecting exterior exposures (trees, adjacent homes, etc).
Search & rescue teams swept through the structure, confirming all occupants successfully escaped the building prior to MFRD arrival.
After approximately 50-minutes, the fire was confirmed under control. Crews remained on scene searching for “hot spots” and salvaging property and gifts.
The origin of the fire was confirmed to have started in an apartment unit on the second floor. Cause of Origin Investigators determined the incident to have been accidental.
Two upstairs units sustained significant smoke and fire damage, with partial roof collapse. A downstairs family residence suffered damage from water and smoke. Three families were displaced as a result of the accident. The American Red Cross was contacted for assistance.
No injuries were reported from the scene.
