September Firefighter of the Month

Sep 26th, 2007

September 26, 2007 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE (SH2007-67) FOR ADDITIONAL INFORMATION R. Steve Huffman Public Information Officer (251) 208-2857/Fax: (251) 208-2861 E-Mail: huffman@cityofmobile.org SEPTEMBER FIREFIGHTER OF THE MONTH Kenny E. Newman, 48, a twenty-two year veteran of the Mobile Fire-Rescue Department has been selected as Septembers Firefighter of the Month by the Pleasant Valley Opportunity Club, who sponsors the program. Newman was nominated because of the hard work and long hours he put into giving his assigned station, Tapia Fire Station located at 4710 Airport Boulevard, a much needed facelift. Newman recently completed putting the fish pond in front of station back in service and working order after being broken for many years. He procured and planted the shrubs and trees in front of the station. He also procured and installed vinyl siding on the front of the building as well as installed a new light that now shines on the American flag so she can be flown 24 hours a day. According to other firefighters assigned at the station it has given the station a much needed appealing facelift. While pride in the workplace was one of the main reasons Newman took on this project there was another reason as well, one close to his heart. The work was done in memory of his brother, Ricky Newman, who was also a Mobile Firefighter, who died in September of 2006. Newman was able to do all the work and get all the materials at no cost to the tax payers or City. ###
