MOBILE, Ala. – At approximately 8:07 AM, Mobile Fire-Rescue Department crews were dispatched to 357 Rylands Street for reports of a residence on fire in the area. Upon arrival on scene (8:11 AM), fire personnel on Engine 3 confirmed that a single story home was engulfed in flames and heavy smoke.
Fire scene operations were established, as suppression teams entered the front of the residence to begin their initial fire attack.
Additional resources were dispatched at approximately 8:08 AM for assistance at the scene.
Search and rescue teams swept through the wood-framed structure to confirm that it was unoccupied at the time of the incident.
Flames were discovered in multiple connecting rooms with extension into the attic. Several crews worked diligently, continuing to suppress flames, smoke, and toxic fumes. Ladder truck personnel successfully cut a vent hole in the roof to allow for vertical ventilation of thick smoke and heated gases, allowing firefighters better visibility of the interior of the building.
After approximately 55 minutes, Incident Command provided an “all clear” on structural search and advised that the majority of the fire was “under control.” However, teams continued to fight back hazardous conditions for several more minutes until all signs of fire were fully extinguished.
There were no reported injuries from the scene. The residence and its contents sustained approximately $25-30,000 in estimated damages.
The cause of the fire remains undetermined, pending further investigation.
