Mobile Fire-Rescue Department units were dispatched at 9:10 p.m. for a report of a residential fire in the area of Selma Street and Rapier Avenue in Mobile, Alabama, Monday night, April 1, 2024.
Units arrived on scene to find smoke and flames visible from the rear of a historic, two-story, wood-frame residence in the 200 block of Rapier Avenue. Firefighters immediately set up a fire attack and were able to stop the fire on the second floor before it spread to the attic, effectively saving the structure.
No one was inside the house. No one was injured in the incident.
The fire’s cause was determined to be accidental after a grill ignited the wood siding of the house.
On average, 10,600 fires are started by grills each year, according to the National Fire Protection Association. Mobile Fire-Rescue Department urges the public to keep grills a safe distance from any combustible material, and reminds residents of multi-family dwellings that grills are never allowed on balconies.
