Steve Huffman Public Information Officer (251) 208-2857/Fax: (251) 208-2861 E-Mail: huffman@cityofmobile.org PROPANE COOKER BLAMED FOR HOUSE FIRE A leaking propane tank in the garage of a house, located at 2674 Rosebud Drive, may be part of the blame for a fire that destroyed the single story, brick structure on Sunday evening, February 13. A call was received at approximately 7:51 p.m. reporting flames and smoke coming from the garage. Firefighters arrived within five minutes reporting heavy smoke and fire coming from all sides of the structure including the roof. All occupants escaped unharmed. One extra fire engine and its crew were called in to assist with the fire. Firefighters also used hose lines to protect the houses on either side of the burning house. Fire investigators discovered a propane cooker in the garage and it appears the tank may have been leaking. A heat source or spark nearby ignited the leaking propane causing the fire. Neighbors told investigators that an explosion occurred a few minutes after the fire had started and before firefighters arrived. No injuries were reported. The house was totaled at an estimated $185 thousand in damage to both the structure and contents. Engines 6, 18, 22, 29; truck 5; rescue 29 and District Chief David Rose responded. The Bureau of Fire Prevention is investigating. The American Red Cross was called to the scene to assist the family. ###
