October Firefighter of the Month

Oct 31st, 2007

October 31, 2007 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE (SH2007-76) FOR ADDITIONAL INFORMATION R. Steve Huffman Public Information Officer (251) 208-2857/Fax: (251) 208-2861 E-Mail: huffman@cityofmobile.org OCTOBER FIREFIGHTER OF THE MONTH Mrs. Elizabeth Johnson and her mother Mrs. Louise Heidelberg had a blowout on Interstate 10 near the Wallace Tunnel on August 13, 2007. They were able to get to the side of the road but both ladies were terribly frightened according to their letter. A Mobile Police Officer pulled behind them shortly afterwards. Then Firefighter James Bekurs, 36, who will be on the department for 2 years in December, stopped to assist. Bekurs immediately took charge of the situation, changed the ladies tire and when the wrecker arrived he used their air compressor to fill the tire to the proper air pressure. Mrs. Johnson stated that she and her 85-year-old mother drove away from the scene feeling safe and truly blessed to have the “angels” help them by sending Firefighter Bekurs to their rescue. Because Firefighter Bekurs showed he cared by going above and beyond the call of duty, he has been recognized with the October Firefighter of the Month award. The program is sponsored by the Pleasant Valley Opportunity Club. ###
