MOBILE, Ala. – At approximately 11:18 PM, Mobile Fire-Rescue Department companies were dispatched to the 100 block of Silverwood St in Midtown Mobile. Multiple witnesses called 911 to report a residence on fire in the neighborhood and that the homeowner was possibly trapped inside.
Upon arrival on scene, MFRD crews discovered a 2-story, wood-frame residence with thick, black smoke and heavy flames present at the rear of the structure. A water source was secured, and fire scene operations were immediately established.
Fire suppression teams made entry into the home to begin the initial fire attack, as search and rescue personnel swept through the residence in effort to locate occupants. Firefighters discovered an approximately 67 year old female occupant down in a bedroom toward the rear of the home. The victim was immediately rescued from the burning structure.
Medical care was assumed by paramedic teams on scene, and the patient was transported to a local hospital for emergency care.
Firefighters continued to battle as flames raged on. Incident Command requested a 2nd-alarm response at approximately 11:36 PM, allowing additional personnel to the assist on scene.
As waves of firefighters suppressed flames on the interior and from the exterior of the home, the incident was eventually brought under control. A total of 15 units (6 engine companies, 3 ladder truck companies, 2 rescue trucks, 3 Chief Officers, and fire investigators) worked vigorously to extinguish the blaze while also ensuring no other homes were damaged as a result.
A firefighter suffered moderate injuries during fire scene operations. The firefighter was assessed and treated at the scene and transported to a local hospital for further evaluation and care.
Investigators continue to review details of the scene to determine the cause of the incident.
