Thursday Fires Keep Firefighters and Investigators Busy

Steve Huffman Public Information Officer (251) 208-2857/Fax: (251) 208-2861 E-Mail: huffman@cityofmobile.org THURSDAY FIRES KEEP FIREFIGHTERS AND INVESTIGATORS BUSY Firefighters responded to two separate fires on Thursday morning, May 1. The first fire was in a residence that occurred at 1110 Lucile Street. The fire was reported at approximately 7:16 a.m. and when firefighters arrived at approximately 7:21 a.m. they reported heavy fire showing from the one-story, wood frame structure. Once entry was made firefighters encountered heavy fire in the hallway and bedroom but were able to quickly extinguish the flames and prevent further spread. The fire started in a child’s bedroom and appears to be accidental but remains under investigation at this time. Damage to the structure and contents is estimated at $30 thousand. No injuries were reported. Engines 2, 9, 11, truck 17, rescue 24 and District Chief Alex Trenier responded. An apartment fire was reported at 315 Brazier Drive, North in apartment D at approximately 8:11 a.m. Firefighters arrived at approximately 8:15 a.m. reporting heavy smoke coming from the upstairs apartment in the Roger Williams Housing Complex. Firefighters made entry and discovered a fire in the bedroom and extinguished the fire. The occupant told Fire Investigators that she had been ironing clothes earlier and couldn’t remember if she had turned the iron off or not. Investigators discovered the iron in the on position. The fire was caused when the iron was apparently left on, sitting on top of some clothes on the bed. Damage is estimated at approximately $30 thousand. No injuries were reported. Engines 8, 12, 14, truck 4, rescue 14 and District Chief John Young responded. ###
