The Mobile Fire-Rescue Department is partnering with Butterfly Network, Inc. to supply all front line advanced life saving ambulances with new ultrasound technology. Butterfly iQ+ is a portable, handheld, ultrasound system that is designed to provide emergency, medical providers with real-time, internal visualizations of patients; thus, forever changing out-of-hospital patient care.
The City of Mobile’s fire department is no stranger to pioneering changes in the fire and emergency medical services. Through its Emergency Medical Services division, the MFRD is reinventing prehospital care, becoming the first fire department in the state to pilot new ultrasound technology via Butterfly Network, Inc.
Butterfly Network, Inc., a digital health company, created the world's first handheld, single probe whole-body ultrasound system using semiconductor technology the Butterfly iQ+. Historically, ultrasound technology has only been available for use in healthcare clinics and hospitals. Together with Butterfly, MFRD aims to transform patient care, health education, and emergency medical research by empowering its paramedics with point-of-care access to AI-powered, handheld ultrasound.
With Butterfly iQ+, paramedics can visualize abdominal and thoracic organs, heart activity, and vasculature in real-time, helping in resuscitation efforts, intravenous (IV) access, and treatment decisions.
While Butterfly iQ+ is not a substitute for clinical training or experience, MFRD paramedics will have new tools to aid them in continuing to provide quality, patient care. The ultrasound technology will be placed in service following several in-service, training sessions.
